  1. There are 7 countries with the suffix , Stan. 5 of these countries were part of the Soviet Union. They are mostly Muslim. Afghanistan was not part of the Soviet union but had a government which was secular and worked with Soviets to stem the growth of belligerent populations opposing Westernization . This Soviet war in Afghanistan lasted from 1979 until 1989. Osama bin Laden claimed his Mujahideen defeated the Soviets and caused the Soviet Union to dissolve. I think Russian oligarchs said enough of spending money on unprofitable member Soviet countries like the Stans and instead spent the money on developing Russian oil and gas industry. Perestroika reformation within the Communist Party allowed vast wealth to flow into the Oligarchs banks. CHECK out the twenty richest men in Russia and see that they are as rich as the richest people in United States. Maybe Perestroika should be renamed Petrostroika !
