Summer 2023 Newsletter

California Dreaming

Hope this summer was happy and peaceful for all! I can’t complain myself, though it has been quite busy. We are settling into the new house…finally got to kick my feet up, as you can see & really try to appreciate finding a corner of LA that I can live with and boy have I! We are nestled into some “mountains.” Anywhere else these would be foothills—and they are called foothills mostly, but there isn’t too awful much to back them up. I love ‘em though & especially love the trees and animals that come with them. Coyotes and bears aren’t my favorite, but they too come with this territory. I’m very grateful for this place & for the fact that it has an OFFICE! So I will no longer be broadcasting out of the corner of a bedroom, AND I will be able to access my books in real time on-air. My only concern relates to that old G. Edward Griffin (or should we call him O.G. Edward Griffin?) interview of Norman Dodd who said one of his researchers was arrested (detained?) for a book he had on his shelf. Yikes! Most of my books scare me as they are, not even considering the possibility of arrest!!

A few more highlights of my summer…I had a birthday! Couple of my friends picked up on my long-time mantra, “I’m forty-something & always will be!” and got me a cake reflecting it…what do you think? I like it 🙂 I got some sweet gifts too, including one from my son who joined me at my mom’s house to “widowsit” as my brother, George the Friendly Truckdriver, calls it. Widowsitting involves a lot of black and white movies on TCM & a few ads for a brilliant book that ties Film Noir to the drinks served in the films. Happily my son snagged one for me. We now have a lifelong project of watching the movies while sipping the drinks. Lifelong because he and my daughter are now in college so I suspect our movie watching will slow to one or two a year.

My special guy, of course, stays with us so we’re not quite empty-nesters which is fine with me! He had a big birthday this summer & come hell or high water—or both combined in the form of Hurricane Hillary—I was not about to cancel his party, so I didn’t. Hillary was a nothing-burger as I expected (as you can see from the picture, it rained but that’s about it). Happily many stout-hearted families came by and a good time was had by all. Lots of Texas BBQ and even an amazing GF cake from Milk Bar that was delivered just in time despite the scary weather reports. Speaking of which, a guest at the party has a cousin who is a meteorologist who confessed that the pressure to hype storms is intense—it stands to reason whether you’re conspiranoid or just think it’s to drive TV watching.

One more thing…we took a trip to New Orleans this summer (ikr?) and to my delight the lobby of the hotel had—get this—a CHAMPAGNE VENDING MACHINE! I kid you not. Gotta love NOLA!

Alrighty…on with the show….or should I say, shows….

This Month’s Book Recommendation

The Gift of Rain, by Tan Twan Eng

I rarely read fiction these days, but since I wasn’t doing much work on the show, I thought I’d treat myself–unfortunately all my books are STILL in boxes. I found this lying around–no idea where it came from and was definitely cautious of anything critically acclaimed in the current cultural environment, but it was about the Pacific theater in World War Two–my father was there in the navy at that time (despite the birthday cake pictured above!) so I decided to give it a go. It was excellent!
